In light of the strong use of the DeStafano 2004 study that the 2004 IOM report makes, it is strange that the 2011 people would reject it for their own report. The 2004 report uses DeStafano to prove no causal relation. Their statement (pasted below) makes explicit mention of the limitation the 2011 report notes (about age of onset etc.) and still argues for the study’s validity. The 2011 report offers no elaboration. In both reports, negative evaluations of studies are summary, dismissive, cavalier, where positive ones are given a little justification. The reader is asked to accept these important dismissals of counter evidence on faith alone. That would be faith in the authority of the IOM.
