Back Goldfinch looking backwards

Details of my July 2016 Sighting

I’ve dropped in two cell-phone shots here to give us the lay of the land. We are looking more or less due east. On the left we see Bucky’s Casino (actually the Prescott Resort with the Casino inside) on the horizon to the left. The tops of the two cypress trees cover parts of the resort. In the night photo on the right Bucky’s windows show as a spread of lights (rather bluish in spots) above center and somewhat left. The right cypress tree cuts a dark interruption into the spread of the resort’s lights. Below center are two bright lights coming from the school yard we can see over the rusty garage roof of my neighbor. The UFO is the light above and a bit to the right of Bucky’s. From this point it will move to the right into the pine tree needles on the right and then return to about this position again and continue on into the pine on the left. It drops out of my view in those dense leaves and reappears in a less leafy area of another tree to the left before winking out.

Following is a transcription of notes made just after the viewing. Square and curly brackets not in my original notes.

Tues July 12, 2016

abt 9.15 p watching Bucky's. I see a bright star a fingernail at arm's length above and ditto to the R of B's. {Note: the perspective of the night photo above is a bit different from the perspective I had while, mostly, sitting and watching.} Not there b4. Odd. It doesn't seem to move (star) but very bright star (Venus?) & not there b4. Watch it. Slowly moves to my R and slightly up. As if aircraft on a straight course towards Prescott but passing over PV instead eventually. (More or less.) {Prescott Valley, to the east of Prescott.} However, it is too bright & also way to[o] slow to be an aircraft like the liners & military & helicopters I see in this view frequently. 4 or 5 liners already tonight. Also no flashing light.

I think, Oh UFO! And go get binocs. First I use phone to take 2 photos a bit zoomed. With the binocs now see 2 LIGHTS side by side & think it is a liner with landing lights on. Maybe they have them on all the time. {A retired 767 pilot friends tells me this is not so.} BUT these are too bright too far away to be that. Very strange. There IS some suggestion of a red light (dim) behind the 2 & part of the assembly. But no way does it look like an airplane. Too big for so far away -- if it were as close as the lights (very bright & quite far apart -- meaning in the binocs well separated, not to unaided eye.) suggest, then it would move faster.

Anyway I watch these 2 synced-bright lights (not sending out a beam [now]) move slowly along their straight trajectory and slowly into the tree barrier there to the R.

BUT NOT TO WORRY. The thing turns to move to my left and follows a straight path slowly still across my vision from R to L parallel to the horizon and, 2-3 finger widths above Buckey's. {In the night photo the light is closer to Bucky’s because I was standing to take the picture, but was sitting as I watched the light move.}

The change of direction is instant & w/out curve, and now the lights appear to be seen from behind -- but that's not it. They are just much dimmer. Some red around them & maybe blue, too. Dim smaller lights. Unsure of those. The 2 main lights, now dimmed, stay the same distance apart  as they were moving the other direction.

As these 2 now move into tree branches on my L, one of them does a quick jump up and around the other. Rapid.

[Here I draw 6 different alignments of two dots to show the move. The first or left light/dot moves up, around and down behind the other.]

And they just wink out in the trees. [My impression is not that I lost sight of them due to the trees, but that they just "winked out."]
