Although I am making up this tightly logical chronology, it is essentially correct, for the physicists are always going back to the double slit experiment. As Brian Greene plunges into it yet again in The Elegant Universe (p. 97), he paraphrases the ubiquitously quoted Richard Feynman as “fond of saying that all of quantum mechanics can be gleaned from carefully thinking through the implications of this single experiment.”
